Article: Falling Into Metaphor

Post by minnespectrum »

I found this article in The Christian Century (which is a progressive/mainline Christian publication), which seems like it may have been influenced by Jaynes in some way. https://www.christiancentury.org/falling-into-metaphor The author mentions that she had heard a retelling of the Fall of Man story which was more sympathetic toward Eve, and portrayed her as the mother of metaphorical language.

Interestingly, she doesn’t say where she heard this interpretation of the Fall story, but it seems similar to Jaynes’ view that metaphorical language became possible with the origin of consciousness (for which the Fall of Man is an allegory). It seems likely there’s a connection.
